When a student graduates from a college or university then has a very little knowledge about the industry even if he has done few internships he might not be able to understand few practical things unless he experiences them or he has learnt from experience of some seniors. In my 10 years experience I have learned many things that helped me in progressing and also learnt the things that hold me back. So for your guidance I have mentioned these few things which I wish I knew when i was starting my career so that I could have done things differently and in a better way.
1) Be an Outstanding Communicator:
Communication plays an important role in success of an individual. In your professional career you will see a lot of smart people but all of them are not successful. The reason is that they know how to do their work in an excellent way but they fail to explain things to their clients or to their seniors which becomes a hurdle in their success. So if you are a smart guy and lack the ability to communicate than chances are that you cannot make to the top position in your offices. So in such case try to improve your communication skills by reading, writing and discussing issues with colleagues or with your friends. You will get countless opportunities to improve your communication skills. In the beginning it might be a difficult but trust me if you step out of your comfort zone then nothing can stop you from being successful.
2) Get Strong:
It might be strange for you that I am connecting work out with the work related advise but both are interlinked. Sitting all the day in the office will result into bad shape of your body and you will be bit lazy so to help you in keeping active exercise will be an antitoxin and cure. When you will be lifting weights or you will be doing exercise or you will be running in the ground, you will learn how to maintain proper posture which if not maintained can result in an injury and secondly you will learn how to control your mind in stress. When you will be exercising regularly you ll be active so your stress level will be down.
Commit to make you strong and health and you can see the effects of this commitment on your job.
3) Define your Boundaries:
work can never be competed as it is a never-ending process so try to define your boundaries related to work. When your office time is over leave the tasks and undergoing project so that you can reach home on time. Don’t check your emails after office time or on weekends. That time is for you to relax, to chit-chat with your friends and family.
when you are assigned a task, work harder to complete it in less than assigned time as a result your speed will be faster. Build this habit in the start and it will help you a lot in future.
4) Save as Much as Possible Early in Your Career:
In the beginning of career an individual has less responsibilities so he can save a handsome proportion of his pay. (20% -50%). This saving can help you later in your life. In the start you can live a simple life and think of other ways where you can invest the hard-earned money. You never know when your job will be over so in that time this saved amount will help you in passing the time or in starting a new business.
5) Use All Your Vacation Days:
Some companies have the policies of offering leave encashment which is that if you don’t avail the given holidays so you will be paid.
In the beginning of my career I and my colleagues were happy that we don’t use our time off and we are the hard works but after sometime I realized that it was wrong. taking vacation is equally important and those who give break to work can focus in a better way on work when they are back. Remember “health before wealth”.
6) Build a Broad Network of Friends:
Try to build a broad and strong network of friends from the beginning because the best jobs and the career doesn’t come through submitting resumes but through trust with humans and piece of mouth.
I for example in my 10 years experience have 4 distinct jobs and each of them was because someone trusted me that I am the best fit for that role. For two roles I wasn’t the perfect guy but the referrer trusted me and I worked hard so as to maintain his trust.
7) Do What Makes You Happy:
You only live once so do the thing that make you happy. In your career you will face many situations where you will be confused in selecting between options so what I will suggest you is to go for the option that will bring happiness in your life. Don’t care about others. they will never understand you. Also there will be things that make you happy today but will not be a source of happiness for you the next year so don’t get upset. Changing your path and changing your mind for constant source of happiness is not a bad thing.
